Jackie Jones

for Ceredigion Preseli

My name is Jackie Jones and I am standing to be the  next MP for the new seat of Ceredigion Preseli.

After thirteen years of Conservative chaos, the UK  is crying out for change. We need to win in Ceredigion Preseli to achieve a Labour government in Westminster. Plaid, LibDems or the Tories cannot deliver for the constituency in government. As a Councillor, former MEP and activist of many years, I have the experience to win Ceredigion Preseli for Labour and be a strong voice as its Member of Parliament.

Get involved with my campaign to give Ceredigion Preseli the Labour MP it deserves.

About me

My father’s family is from the fishing village of Llangwm, Pembrokeshire. This area has been home to me since I can remember and was where I spent my formative years.

I am a Barrister, former Professor of Law, local Councillor and have served as your Member of the European Parliament. I have the key skills to help bring solutions to the issues facing Ceredigion Preseli, the ideas and drive to move the community towards a brighter future.

My energy, innovation, vision, integrity and determination can and will deliver positive change.

A great campaigner and long-standing trade union activist

A passionate and experienced social activist, I have led several high-profile campaigns, including 1950s Women pensions, gender equality, ending violence against women and embedding human rights legislation into Welsh law.

I’ve been a trade union representative for 15 years for the University and Colleges Union (UCU and formerly NATFHE). I know that members never want to go on strike or negatively impact students, so we have to work hard to convince them to fight for better conditions and pay and, if necessary, to strike.

It takes patience, dedication and listening to members. They deserve decent wages and fair conditions of work and as their representative, I always tried to secure it for them.

I am a member of UNITE the Union, GMB and UCU.

campaigning for change

I’ve been a Labour Party member for many years and I have campaigned in many elections. I have been a candidate too.  I know how to deliver an energetic and successful campaign.

In 2021, I stood as a Senedd candidate for Preseli Pembrokeshire (a third of which is now in the new seat of Ceredigion Preseli), overseeing a nine-point swing toward Welsh Labour. That was with only 7 weeks of campaigning due to COVID restrictions.

A strong campaign with a dedicated team and clear messaging will be key to taking this seat. Plaid is limited in what it offers voters - nationalism and division, not hope and investment for the region. The Lib Dems are partly responsible for the austerity measures.

Only a Labour government can deliver for all of Wales and the UK.

Experience winning difficult elections

In 2022, I was elected as a County Councillor, turning a comfortable Tory majority into a strong Labour gain. We campaigned hard from day one to win over voters with fresh ideas and the possibility of positive change.

In 2019-20 I represented all of Wales in the European Parliament. I was a passionate voice on issues like jobs, equality, climate action and investment into Wales. In the 2019 General Election, I traveled throughout Wales to help campaign for a Labour victory.

I currently work as a lecturer in law and speak to young people all the time about their vision for our future. Ceredigion has a large University population and I am best placed to get them out to campaign and vote.

Why vote for me?

With my campaign, we can finally bring real change to Ceredigion Preseli and remove the Tories from Westminster and Plaid from West Wales.

With its broad support base, Labour stands as the exclusive party capable of securing a majority and overturning this corrupt Conservative government.

I will run an energetic campaign and deliver the win we need to build a fairer Ceredigion Preseli.

My priorities for Ceredigion Preseli

After years of corruption, the country is ready for change and only Labour can provide it. If selected and elected, I’ll work with the Welsh government and the incoming Labour government at Westminster to fight for the things that will make a real difference - championing issues beyond nationalist agendas.

My priorities include:

  • More affordable housing for local people to rent and buy.

  • Investment in public transport for an integrated network of affordable, low-carbon transport across West Wales

  • Creating green jobs that are well-paid and rejuvenate local communities.

  • Tackling climate change, including investment for renewables, making Wales and the UK one of the greenest countries in the world.

  • Enhancing broadband connectivity across West Wales.

  • Ensuring the Welsh language and culture are protected.

  • Co-operation in action: Buying local & shortening food miles.

"I’ve seen how politically effective Jackie is campaigning with her as part of Wales for Europe, as a local council candidate & agent, and as Vice Chair Wales Co-operative Party Council. Jackie is has expertise, empathy and enthusiasm, her commitment to equality and fairness is evident in all she does. Jackie has a track record of winning campaigns and representing the new constituency.

Her understanding and engagement with voters is impressive and, more importantly for Ceredigion Preseli, gets voters to the polls for Labour.  Jackie has the skills and determination to invigorate the new Ceredigion Preseli constituency party, and to beat Plaid and the Tories to deliver a Labour victory."

“It is now extremely likely that it will be women, who continue to bear the brunt of Tory privatisation, cuts in public services and the cost-of-living crisis, who will be key to voting Labour into power at the next general election. So we need a parliamentary candidate for Ceredigion Preseli Labour who has a strong track record of campaigning not just against the Tories but for and with women, and whose integrity, ability, and warmth will connect with all voters and especially women in our new constituency. Without a doubt, Jackie Jones is that candidate.”

“I am very pleased to endorse Jackie; her qualities as a formidable, effective, and purposeful political campaigner are exactly what the towns and communities across the new constituency of Ceredigion Preseli need. Her considerable experience gained as an MEP, within the co-operative movement, and the Labour Movement for Europe make her an excellent choice to be our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
